Overview & History

Launched in 2007, the Global Compact Network South Africa (GCN-SA) works to support sustainability efforts of companies and also coordinates collective initiatives of signatories. These include national companies as well  as local subsidiaries of international corporations, academic institutions, cities and civil society groups which have signed up to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).

Based on the 10 principles of the UNGC that addresses business and human rights, labour practices, environmental protection and anti-corruption, the GCN-SA embeds these universally accepted principles through regular learning by sharing forums, the annual general meeting and several issue-specific dialogues.

The Focal Point

The National Business Initiative (NBI) is the national focal point of the UNGC in South Africa. A business coalition of over 140 national and multi-national companies, the NBI works with members to achieve sustainable growth and development through responsible business practices, facilitates the growth and development of the network and disseminates shared knowledge and experiences.

As the UNGC secretariat in South Africa, the NBI has dedicated a team that includes a Director, Programme Manager and a Project Manager.
